THE FORUMS

There are two reasons to create a social networking site, listed here in order of importance:
1) To connect people with similar interests (friends, network)
2) Enable users to create and share content (profile, about me / interests, photos, videos, blog, etc)
As far as the PRIMARY function of a "Social Networking" site, obviously we'll all be able to "add friends" and look at member's profiles etc (right?). A few really awesome things to connect people, which I really hope to see, would be:
-An instant message system that connects all people who are "online" similar to the one Facebook currently has, which is great.
-A geographical feature that would allow you to look up other users in your area or in a city/state you are going to visit.
As far as user created content, my main suggestion would be to keep the content (video, photos, etc) segregated from the main profile page. The biggest problem with Myspace right now is that a user can overload their main profile page with so much digital content that a lot of them make my browser freeze up so I don't even bother surfing pages anymore. In that sense, I'd keep it more like Facebook - keep the main page simple and straight forward so as not to make it a chore to check out profiles. Photo and video bins are straight forward enough, easy to access with just a click.
Nice suggestions man
Hey dude, look at "bodyspace" on bodybuilding.com. They pretty much have the same thing that you're planning....

One thing I'm interested in is having the option to make your videos and pictures exclusive to certain members. This is so you can have pics and vids of more explicit shit or of girls and things you've done that you may not want to be public. The way you do this is include a "private" album where all your crazy stuff goes. In order for someone to access that can either be by user request, or by the owner to selectively allow it to certain users.

if you want the bells and whistles, then take the forum out of that space and let it stand on its own as a seperate entity.
Forums are the only use for the internet. i got into game to get AWAY from internet nerdery, not to steep myself in it more.
There's som shit you can do tweak it and make it a more "sticky" experience, but, tbh, the cost to return ratio on this wont make it sustainable if you get over-ambitious.

I have no requests for the new RSDN.
All's I have to say is that it is incredibly decent of Tyler to be willing to spend all that money to upgrade the site. Upgrading RSDN is going way above and beyond the call of duty.
I am very appreciative of him being willing to do this. It is an unbelievably giving thing to do.

I know it's the thing for companies to do these days, adding social networking and wiki's and such to their websites. I really hope it doesn't become a convoluted mess like I've seen happen to other companies.
We're trying to do the same thing where I work and it's just money down the drain. Some where along the line the people in charge of the project lost sight of it's real purpose: enhance interaction between employees, share knowledge throughout the company, share with clients/partners. Employees find it tedious, our clients/partners make fun of it, the execs are embarrassed by it and can't believe they spent so much money on it.
I vote to go with a simple minimalist design or just keep things the way they are :)

I like the instant messenger idea. A usable chatroom would be nice as well.

I think it would be helpful if the user could decide to make some images/videos/blog posts private or password protected. Or, they could 'authorize' other users to be able to see them.

Facebook route for sure.
But the OLD facebook, it was very clean, and everything was easy to see and use, I hate what they did with the new one.
