THE FORUMS
Facebook layout over Myspace.
Cleaner, better and inevitably faster.

Definitely go the Facebook route. Frankly, I do not think people here would be willing to put in the time required for creating and maintaining a fancy page with music, crazy backgrounds, applications deluxe, etc.

I would try a myspace type layout, have you seen facebook lately? Talk about being bogged down with apps and useless junk. The only problem with myspace on a RSD nation type site is the excessive HTML. Don't know if you have a myspace type budget but you could go with that, pretty straight forward. Limit the number of pictures, customizable HTML, get rid of all the useless stuff like Myspace music, Apps, etc. Definitely keep a blog though

I vote for facebook, also Tyler I think itd be a good idea to add links to blogs and stuff like that, itd be cool to encourage every user to start their own blog to record their progress, valuable resource to have the tranformations recorded, I started my blog because I liek the RSD blogs, it can be an RSDN kinda thing

did you just call tyler stupid? that's like blasphemy here.
he has a point though, seems like most people here are voting for facebook, im biased because personally im fustrated with facebook and am exclusively on myspace. whatever style you pick keeping it simple is the best thing you can do.

Facebook for sure... for functionality, relative simplicity compared to myspace, cleaner look and layout, better photo sharing option.
Damn i can see the global picture of this thing taking shape... social networking for the self help/getting chicks fans... this has potential to reach Zuckerberg proportions... and that guy is a 24 year old snot nosed millionaire.

A standard format is the way I would go. It makes navigation easier and you can get to the content you want quicker.
It sound like you are going with a tabbed model, that is perfect; dividing different forms of content into their own page makes everything easier.
Clean and simple pages are what I like the best. Custom backgrounds, colours etc... can be distracting and shift the focus away from the real content.
I spend most of my time on social networking sites on other people's pages not tweaking my own, so I appreciate a simple, easy to navigate layout.
RSDN 2 will be awesome!!!

This forum is excellent the way it is. There is no need for any "improvements". I recall a forum that I used to love to go on that wanted to "upgrade" and create "improvements". After seeing these "improvements", I have never been back to that place and they lost around 80% of their membership. If I want a MySpace look and MySpace functionality, I'll go on MySpace. Same thing for Facebook. If I want an awesome forum that works and there is no problems with and I want to talk about dating stuff, I go to RSDNation. There is no need for an "upgrade".

You can always add more apps later on as you see fit and as budget allows anyways. The worst thing is to spend so much money fleshing out cool features that people hardly use. If however the community really likes this thing and it ends up being used a lot and we end up outgrowing it as a result then just add more apps. Aristotle said it best "form follows function."

The simpler and more straightforward the better...but make sure it has a unique style to go along with it.
Myspace bugs so many people because it tries to do too much and ends up only doing everything half-assed.

The debate has been between making it more user customized like MySpace, or keeping it simple and clean like Facebook.
Here's my personal (and not that informed -- I've never used these sites) opinion.......
MySpace seems to have lost marketshare to Facebook because the site has become so bogged down with aps that it takes too long to load and too long to figure out.
Facebook seems to have shot ahead because it's format is predictable and easy to use.
Now for RSDN the "Profile" page is really just an offshoot of the main site. So it's not the main value proposition like MySpace or Facebook. It's really just something extra we're throwing in there to make RSDN more fun for all you guys, so it doesn't require that many bells and whistles.
However some apps I'd personally like to see useable are:
-YouTube
-Slide
-Google video
-Flickr
Etc etc...
Apparently this is done by allowing the user to add in HTML (again I'm new to all this). We may add them now or we may just launch the site and do the programming for them six months or a year down the line.
Now by me coming to you guys asking for suggestions, please don't give me back a bunch of bullshit like "I want a free bootcamp on streaming video BLAH BLAH BLAH..." as if this is on a multi million dollar budget and we've somehow transcended the need to create revenue. This site is already costing hundreds of thousands as it is, and it's mostly complete, so please don't give me a headache by asking for something unrealistic.
(Some of the requests I get really amaze me -- usually it's from non entrepreneurs who really believe money grows on trees).
But if you have any LEGIT and REALISTIC suggestions for the "Profile" pages, I'd really love to hear it in this thread. Particularly if you're an experienced user of social networking sites. It would be very appreciated!!
