this video makes a great reference to  sign posts
the finger just points to the moon, dont look at the finger
the moon should be the focal point

in other words like tolle says it is the deeper reality to where the words point, not the words that matter

what bruce lee talk about  when talking about jeet kune do  is simply a way of doing
this does not only apply to matrial arts but many many aspects of life

for example this can be applied to basketball or soccer
the greatest ball players have been able to do the most with the least effort
when your in the "zone"  you are not thinking and you cant miss
you are 'feeling' and all ur shots are landing
this can be likend to bieng in state
you dont invest you ego( thoughts forms) into it,  u dont take credit for it, it just happens through you

Here is the natural instinct, and here is control. You are to combine the two in harmony. If you have one to the extreme, you will be very unscientific. If you have the other to the extreme, you become all of the sudden a mechanical man.
- Bruce Lee

like martial arts
the  'ART'  of shooting a basketball has two components

1. the proper 'form'/ shooting mechanics, the mental side of it, aka the fundamentals  the control

2. your natural faculties, your "feel"   presences   instinct   your connection to the present reality infront of you - direct expirience

ultimately in reality you can never have perfect shooting form, there are millions of muscle fibers firing ever time u shoot a basketball so a shot can never be fundamentally perfect - ( same as pickup)
since there is no fundamentals
also in reality there is no such thing as a basketball or a hoop, these just exist as cognitive models in your mind, in reality they are lumps of atoms.
fundamentals, techniques dont exist, they are just a way of doing

u can have a guy who has never picked up a basketball, and tell him to shoot it at the hoop
he will have no proper form or technique, but he will fire the ball at the hoop using his natural instinct,he willjust be focused on gettin the ball in
he will be focused  ''on the moon, not the finger"
he gets probaly 4/10 shots in

then you teach him some fundamental shooting form
he will now be focused on his technique rather than just throwing the ball in
he willbe inside his head
"on the finger rather than the moon"
then he gets 2/10 shots in

the you got mj who has the fundamentals down
but is also able to be outiside of his head(in the zone) and "feel" the ball in with a follow through
he gets 10/10 shots in

the best guys follow form and technique, as guidlines
but are not confined by it
they shoot thousand and thousands of shots, that these principles become internalised and are easy as walking, walking takes no thought you just do it
they dont have to be concious of their techniue in a game because they have pratice enough till it has become instinct, their unconcious mind does it for them. it is their reality now that can make it.

this can be likend to outer game(conrtol)
and so called natural game(instinct)

combine the 2 in harmony

peace

These quotes are great.  What books are they from?

Also, are the modern Jeet Kun Do schools teaching cool stuff like this now, or do you have to stick to the Dragon himself?

"For men almost always walk along the beaten path, and what they do is almost always an imitation of what others have done before. But you cannot walk exactly in the footsteps of those who have gone before, nor is it easy to match the skill of those you have chosen to imitate. Consequently, a prudent man will always to to follow in the footsteps of great men and imitate those who have been truly outstanding, so that, if he is not quite as skillful as they, at least some of their ability may rub off on him. One should be like an experienced archer, who, trying to hit someone at a distance and knowing the skill of his bow, aims at a point above his target, not so his arrow will strike the point he is aiming at, but so, by aiming high, he can reach his objective" - Machiavelli
