Money's a necessity in today's world, sadly, and I'm trying to find ways to scrape some bills together for stability and to promote some sense of independence. I'll try to be as straight forward to gather some answers.

Background and skills
- 18 years old, 2nd semester in college (commuting)
- currently looking for a job
- pride myself as a good writer
- computer savvy with the basic/intermediate things

Interests and subjects I'm knowledgable about
- software
- video games
- music
- some philosophical theory
- morality

Goals
- to make some extra money on the side of a possible job (basically, passive income) to help get by
- to learn new things

I'm majoring in IT or Computer Science (still undecided). Is there really any route I can take to make some money? I find it quite tedious making the small amount I make from collecting recyclable items. Seriously.

Advice and input would be appreciated; thank you.

Watch Owen's Truth About Success videos.  And dude, you're not gonna be making "passive income" any time soon unless you're a genius investor.  That said, if you're a good programmer (and by good I mean you can code in multiple languages; C++, Java, Python at minimum) then your skills are in high demand.  Otherwise, look into starting your own company.  If John D. Rockefeller could go from poverty to being the richest capitalist in history, you can find a way to make a decent amount of cash.

There is a saying in the entrepreneurial world that goes something like this: You have to work 48 hours a day to get in a position to generate passive income.

I get it. You read an inspirational book, or you hate your career. You discovered the word 'passive income' and WOW, that's it. It's the equivalent of pick up lines compared to be being good with woman. Those millionaire books sell, and some of them are great. One of the greatest you might find is the Fastlane millionaire: www.amazon.com/Millionaire-Fastlane-Crack-Wealth-Lifetime/dp/0984358102/ref=sr_1_1
Another one you might want to read is: www.amazon.com/How-Get-Rich-Greatest-Entrepreneurs/dp/1591842719/ref=sr_1_1

There are some more books, but I suggest you stop reading business books, or books about becoming a millionaire. It's great to wrap your mind around the philosophy. It's great to see how much you will need the right mindset.
But, more important, is tons of actions. Lots of it. Working hard. Extremely hard. You also don't want to go in analyses paralyses, where you go like: Oh shit, i need to learn about finance. And customers, and damn..marketing too..? Wow... Damn! Investors? Angel investors? Venture capitalist? etc etc
its a road you might not want to enter. Just learn as you go.
First say HI to the girl, my name is [ X ] .. How are you..
* BOOM ROADBLOCK *
THEN you find out how to keep a conversation going.
If you just enter pick up, you might not want to learn about Julians drama game.. You might just want to focus on learning how to get some rapport going.
The same goes for entrepreneurship.
You learn by doing. Reading is a great tool. But it's an addition.

You need to become good at something and you also need to stop thinking about "jobs" to get rich.
You are not going to be rich by becoming a programmer, nor are you going to get rich by becoming a salesman. You are going to get rich if you build your own company. To do that, you need certain qualities, a certain mindset, a vision and a lot more. Felix Dennis might explain you this in his book  "how to get rich".
So, you might pick a job as a salesperson to become the type of man that you want to be. A salesjob is probably the closest job possible to being an entrepreneur.
Always Be Closing. In business, it's about profit. Learning how to sell is majorly important.

How you are going to build a business, that's up to you (actually, the HOW you can also learn by reading as you GO. But ..WHAT type of company.. that's you). Create a vision, set your goals, and begin with your first step. It's a dirty, hard place to be. If you want to create passive income because you want to be lazy, then forget it. Just forget it.
Most entrepreneurs work way way more then most employees do, and if you can't even get your shit together at a job good luck building a company.

Tylers video about succes might learn you this concept even deeper:

Forget passive income for now. Focus on becoming a person of massive value. Value = money. The more value you bring to the life of people, the richer you will become.

Read those two books. I would probably start with the fastlane millionaire. Check Owen Cooks video. Read Felix Dennis.
Read what they say you should read, or read the books they mention.. and go from there.
But, never forget.. ACTION > Reading.

Same as pick up. You don't become great with women by only watching videos at the front page of RSDnation. Same with a company. You will, fail, hard.. and that's how it suppose to be.

Like "the last lecture" describes: Those roadblocks are put there for a reason.

Good luck! Work hard, Work smart. Don;'t believe the hype.

I have one thing to add,

Why you aren't a millionaire:

You're pretty young.  Have you made "active" income yet?  That'll grow your balls.  Do that first.

Anything you do in life with 'ease' probably isn't worth doing.

So to summarize, you are...

-Young
-Unemployed
-Writer
-Computer Nerd
-Music / ian
-IT student
-Just need 'some extra money' / job
-passive income for stability and independence
-learn some new things

Perfect.

So your goal is not to be rich, wealthy or start a business. Your goal is just some cash really.

So here's my advice.

In the immediate future, do get a side job, part time, short hours, to get you that pocket cash. In order maximize the value from this job, aim for something that pays a little bit more than minimal, less physical, less stressful, one that forces you to meet people so you learn new things.

The following jobs might suit you.

Restaurant Server - this is where your young looks will help you, pays above minimal because of tips, and you have to be social. (cons: it can be physical)

Bartender - same as server above but more money (but more hardwork) (pros: your social and interpersonal skills will soar)

Security Guard - Considerably more pay. (cons: boring like watching a paint dry?) You will leave this job with a few lines in your resume that suggests you've learned to quickly assess personal characters, and build trust / confidence in people's minds. Aim for mall jobs, university as opposed to industrial ones.

Retail Sales - You can make a little bit above minimal plus bonus but the perks are in the social skills you build. I would focus on clothing stores where people of your age level shop. If you can, cosmetic and beauty products stores. In the interview question, you will be asked how you will make women comfortable dealing with you, a male sales associate. That's one of the skills you will learn in that kind of job.

Admin Assistant / Receptionist / Clerk - You will be working in the office so choose one that is in your industry. That way you are building experience for your resume. Pay is above minimal and you'll learn basic phone skills, customer service, and bookeeping.

Remember to do this part time, short hours. Your goal is to just make some cash, learn some new things.

Now on some passive income that leads to more independence.

First, you don't want to be in business for this one. If you do, you'll either turn into an entrepreneur that always married to the enterprise, a management hawk, that's always working more than his employees, or Mr. Operations that is slave to his own creation.

What you need is to pursue of you've already started. Writing, software, video games, music.

You need to be on the Creative side of the money making. You need to create something that pay in royalties.

For writing, you want to aspire to becoming like Rowling. You can also write IT books and university textbooks. A long time ago, I wrote a manual for an extremely hard to use software. The company found out about it and decided to bring me on board, paid me a tiny commission per new sales of the software. A small percentage but added up to a healthy passive income.

For music, you'll be competing with an army of broke, hungry musicians in the world. But if you can pull it off, your songs will pay you passive income for a very long time. Move on to the next one...

For IT / computer, you can write a software? app? Again, passive income for as long as the market finds your application useful. If you want to turn this into a career, I would focus on software / apps for medical or biotech industries.

Bonus tips:

Courses - if you teach what you know and put in courses (dvd, recorded audio, downloadable) format, that's an additional royalty producing cashflow.

Real Estate - This is the king of passive income. If you can borrow or come up with a deposit, get a small property for rental. Minus mortgage, maintainance, taxes and other costs, the left is your passive income. You need to do your research as you can come out net negative. If you live in a city with a large university, find a house with 10 rooms, rent out the rooms to students. At $4000-$5000 / month, you have a lot more to play with deductions. To cut the time it takes to manage the place, delegate to one of the renter. For a rental discount, he/she will be responsible for basic housekeeping, leaving you only to collect rent.

Hope that helps.
