Are guided meditations as valid as silent meditation

I've been using a few guided meditations/hypnosis CDs lately, and have got a lot out of them. Part of me thinks they are a bit of an easy option or short cut to a meditative state though. In my experience it is more challenging to still the mind in silence. Any thoughts in this?

Meditation is about relaxation, so if guided meditation helps you relax, it is fine.

Buuuuut, the way Tyler preaches meditation, is that, you're learning to draw stimulation from yourself so you din't need validation from anybody. In that case, you would be using guided meditation as a cheat, as it is entertainment for the mind.

Perhaps, we should do both. Cover all the bases.

Meditation is all about being aware of what's happening in your mind, and knowing how it effects you.

What you should do is, regardless of which one you choose, making sure you're aware of what's going on inside your own mind.

If you spend enough time with each of them, and you really pay attention to what's happening in your own mind, you'll be able to answer that question for yourself. And that's kinda the point of meditation: being able to answer questions for yourself about how things affect you personally.

Guided meditations are Nowhere near as powerful as Vipassana meditation for example.
I always feel its the cheap and lazy way to do it and I wouldnt even count it as real meditation
Throw away ur 5 euro CD with some faggot talking about going to your happy place and just
Sit down and make your mind blank. This is real meditation and will take u back to ur core,
Stripping away ur old thought patterns rather than adding an extra layer of bullshit
To it and defeating the whole purpose of actual meditation.

<rant> I've never understood people wanting to make their minds go "blank." Meditation isn't supposed to be about relaxing insofar as escaping the world, meditation is suppoed to be about practicing having relaxed awareness, so you can have relaxed awareness in your day to day life. In your day-to-day life, your mind isn't a blank, and after 2 years of meditation myself, I can't remember a time where my mind has gone blank from meditation. The thoughts slow down, to be sure, but that's not the same. </rant>

Some cool replies on here - I've been doing guided meditations which focus on chakras, which I guess you would call mind-body awareness exercises. These are great for presence and having a nice vibe. Really found that 30 mins doing this before hitting it to be a great habit.
