As far as getting you laid - drums are the most attractive ones, since it's the most physical activity.
However, any instrument, when viewed as an amplification to your value, will actually do the opposite. When you're on stage, you have value, when you get off and go speak to some chicks, and being a chode who thinks music will get him laid - you lose.
Yeah, there are the occasional girls that will sleep with you JUST because you play in a band, but in that case - an instrument rarely matters.
Most chicks that go to gigs have already slept with at least 1 or 2 musicians, so it's no big deal.
So I'm sorry if that's not your actual intent, but since you posted this in the main pickup forum, I assumed the question is tied to "which instrument will get me more girls"

Now as far as musicianship goes - I'd say pick 2. 1 main and piano on the side. It is incredibly easy to "get" it when you have a piano infront of you. Also makes for easier songwriting, especially if you combine 2 instruments.

Drums are hard to move around and REALLY HARD to isolate in a spot where you can practice without bothering anyone. If you choose to go that way - consider electronic drums, on the side of a main kit. They are not the real thing, but you can still keep them in your bedroom and practice w/ headphones or w/e.

Every chode and his grandma plays guitar.  Badly.  Noone listens to guitar music anyway, especially not girls.
Drums are for weirdos.

Go with Piano.  It's the ultimate instrument. Plus you can move easily onto keyboards for sequencing & producing if that's your bag.

youre retarded, obviously not a musician, completely ignorant of the entire instrumental guitar market. gtfo. everything cool is a chode magnet.

music is an artform. if you just want to make music, try a few free music creation tools (synthesia is an easy, quick one to start). newer musicians often just want to play with music and make something that sounds good, and learning an instrument doesn't reach that point for a few years. you need to be willing to invest 5 years before you start to come into your own, and the last 5 years is typically where your style will come out.

i'll give you a basic why of the big 4:

guitar: EXTREMELY expressive. every note on a guitar can be articulated (and modified in the case of electric guitars). vibrato, slides, bends, pull offs, and string gauge differences give the guitar an insanely complex range of phrasing and articulation. it's also got lots of big chords (3 & 4 finger, barre chords). tuning possibilites along with capos basically = infinite possibilities. you need to be an extremely dynamic person to fully explore the instrument, or you will die before you scratch the surface.

piano: an excellent instrument - very simple layout, very fast familiarization. lots of amazing musicians got their start on the instrument because it provides an amazing foundation for understanding what music is on a fundamental level (dissecting relationships between intervals over time). the instrument doesn't have the expressive range that a guitar does because of the physics behind a piano, but you can still get a ton of different sounds out just by changing the force that you come down on a key with.

drums: drums are the rhythmic staple of western music (and eastern to an extent, but they usually use hand drums). they're a shitload of fun to play once you've developed a good sense of rhythm. it's also an awesome workout.

electronic: electronic music is a shitty word, but is pretty commonly used to describe music that's primarily created and/or sequenced with software. i love the shit out of electronic music - it's easy to spend an hour or 2 straight just adjusting knobs to get a new sound that has it's own voice to it. it's very free and unlimited, and there's lots of potential in the market right now. you'll need business savvy if you ever want to go past the labor of love and make money from music, but damn if it doesn't feel good to accidently make $100 from dicking around because people love a song you've made.

good luck man. you can PM me if you want to know anything about the guitar, it's my biggest passion and i can type for fucking days on the subject so i should prolly just stop now

This. If you want to be a musician, learning piano at the beginning has alot of benefits. Everything you learn on piano will be directly transferable to any other number of instruments :) As well as giving you the strongest possible foundation in music theory.

He's asking for our advice, and we're giving it to him.

He made no alusions to impressing people, only to learning a musical instrument. What's your issue?

PS so nice to see Vic mentioned on rsdn. He's such a gentleman.

Cello is pretty fucking awesome bro. Not even trolling, the timbre is amazing.

Drums are pointless unless you are with accompanyment, girls aren't going to fawn over some crazy time signature, they want some melody, unless you're fuckin with a black chick...jokes aside, you could be the most talented drummer in the world, and a girl would find the guy who can play some basic melody more appealing...

This is kind of a stupid question because it's usually about personal preference.

Piano is the easiest in the sense it requires the press of one finger of one hand to make a perfect sounding note. Piano is also the basis for learning to read music, it's the "foundation" so to speak.

Piano also happens to be one of the largest instruments and thus has little portability (and it's no where near as cool as playing something on a rinky dink midi keyboard to a girl as it is playing an acoustic guitar).

While you can make similar arguments for both instruments I prefer the piano for PERSONAL reasons, though your typical girl will probably prefer a guy with a guitar.

My personal philosophy: You need to step to every single girl like a fucking bomb. You need to have presence. You need to stand out, and not in a surface level way such as what you're wearing, but as who you are and the way in which you communicate. You need to be unforgettable. You need to create a sense of urgency, that you are now or never. You need to push and at the same time be completely willing to walk away. It is essential to disidentify with the ego, otherwise the inherent rejection associated with pickup will destroy you.

And btw, I happen to know a great deal about music and to say piano is less expressive and guitar offers endless possibilities is laughable.

90% of the posts in this thread make me want to give up years of self-development, drink myself stupid then burn rsdnation down from the inside and then climatically murder myself

depends why you want to learn an instrument? make sweet ass music? express yourself? play in a band?

my vote is for piano. but drums are pretty important too cause you'll have to learn move your limbs in different riddems. but piano is by far the most versatile instrument. and the theory, skills and ear you develop learning it carry onto other instruments.
