I suppose this post is my way of showing gratitude to Alex for the work he's done so far which has impacted my life in so many positive ways...
I drove down to DC from my hometown outside of Pittsburgh around noon on Thursday. Having not slept for about 3 days because of work I was surprised I even went through with going down at all, but the 3 1/2 hour drive went smoothly aside from not having cash to pay the turnpike fee. I arrived in DC a few hours before the scheduled 7:00pm start and explored the Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods where some of my friends were living.
When I got to the conference room where the talk was held I was surprised at the diversity there in terms of RSD guys...and one girl. I had never met anyone involved in pick-up aside from a few instructors and a guy in Russia. I 'd have to say that I was really amazed that most of the guys there were really cool...and even from my area. It was definitely cool to network in that way. The girl was also a breath of fresh air because I always figured these sort of events would be filled with creepy guys who love methods and tactics..or as Alex I think it was referred to them as vampires sucking the value out of everything they could. I mistook her for Korean at first glance because of the fact that she was asian but it turned out that she was from Kazakstan and her second language was Russian so we spoke Russian for about half hour until the program started. A the diversity at RSD!
So to the point of my post..Alex's talk:
I'm not gunna rehash every sentence he spoke, but just give the gist of what I took from it and from him as a person.
The biggest thing I noticed was his total lack of ego about the girls he banged or any of the successes he's had over the years. He has a nack for not taking compliments and commendations too seriously by making it funny. I noticed in the video interview he did with Tim that this was something that he admired Tim for not having an ego about shit like that. I felt that Alex equally exemplified this.
He also had a way with connecting with the audience in a really relaxed and amusing way...(relaxed arousal so to speak). He lives what he teaches I guess you can say ;) I've noticed with speakers not just in pick-up but in any field that they will often over do their personality and come across arrogant and what not, which make no mistake can work, but Alex seemed to genuinely want to help the audience improve. This wasn't just some thing to build his brand in the states or whatever. Examples of this relaxed connection was him just talking about his home country, moot (which is the Australian term for the area from bellybutton down to approximate knee level on a girl if I'm not mistaken), mushrooms, Japanese adventures and so on..
At this point you may be asking, "In what way does that relate to relaxed connection?"
I'd say it's because it could be so tempting being in his position in the pick-up industy to talk about bullshit Hollywood all day and the hottest spots in the world where all the hottest people are, but how would that connect with the audience in DC? Most of us were of college age and I think fit the mold of that 'having fun' which he harps on. I don't think he really had too much knowledge as to who would be there either so it's not like he was just like, "OK i have to talk about something that they like.
'
...this is Alex. Just a personable dude. Someone who actually cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
