I know this is sort of unhelpful "advice" but frankly, if this shit is even happening to you in the first place, you are likely giving off a weak/prey vibe. That dude would NEVER say this shit to me or most guys I know because they know we will not be a pushover. That nononsenseselfdefense site the guy above listed is excellent and here is an excerpt from it:

Interview
This is where the criminal decides if you are safe to attack.

Yes, with all violence, the assailant's safety is a critical factor in deciding whether or not to attack. If a criminal was truly mentally ill, he would feel compelled to act, even if there was no chance whatsoever of success. If someone is so emotionally outraged that he were truly "out of control" he would not hesitate to physically assault ten Hells Angels. The fact that he doesn't indicates that there is still a part of them that is calculating risk to themselves.

"Can I get away with it?" is a major motivation for what people decide to do -- or not do. Hence, the interview.

This is one interview you want to fail. If you fail, the assailant decides that he cannot successfully, or easily, attack you. Then if he is a criminal, he will proceed to seek easier prey. In the case of an emotionally upset individual, he will change tactics. For example instead of physically assaulting you he will proceed to stand back and proceed to verbally abuse you. This allows him to 'win' without putting himself at physical risk.

There are five basic types of interviews. The one a criminal uses depends more on his personal style than anything else.

Regular - This is the most common form of interview for muggers. The criminal will approach you under the guise of normalcy, i.e., needing information or small item (e.g. matches). This is a distraction. While he is talking, he is not only getting in position to attack, but a) checking your awareness about what he is doing and b) your commitment to defending yourself.

This is why you should always be careful when someone approaches you in a fringe area and asks for something. Your answer should always be "no" and insist on him keeping his distance. Both muggers and stranger rapists often use this technique.

Hot – Hot interviews are sudden and unexpected emotional blitzkriegs against you. They just "pop out of nowhere." You are minding your own business one minute, and the next you have a threatening, obscenity-spouting, screaming person charging down on you. The success of this strategy relies on you not being accustomed to dealing with extreme emotional violence and reacting in a stunned and confused manner. You must be willing to immediately shift into an extreme of physical violence to fail such interviews. Paradoxically, if you can immediately display this commitment, the attacker will often abort.

Escalating - Unlike a hot interview, which starts out immediately hostile, an escalating interview starts out normally but it rapidly turns hostile. The person or people test(s) your boundaries by escalating outrageous behavior. Every time he is not slapped down (i.e., he is successful), his behavior becomes more and more extreme until finally he attacks. This is very common interview for date rapists. It is also common when you walk into the middle of a group of loitering young thugs, what "supposedly" starts out with them "jes messin' witcha" escalates into a robbery or assault. Sometimes both.

Silent – A silent interview is when a criminal puts himself in a position to observe you. He may never speak until the attack, but he has been watching all along. He may position himself out of sight in a parking structure and follow you. Or he may make his presence known and decide to attack if you show fear of his presence

Prolonged - An interview can take anywhere from mere moments (hot) to weeks (prolonged). Prolonged interviews are often combined with other types Being stalked is prolonged escalation. A serial can silently watch a victim for days. Whereas a bunko scam would be prolonged regular interview while the con artist attempts to win your trust. With prolonged interviews, the intent is seldom obvious from the beginning, therefore having the first four levels of the Pyramid of Personal Safety in place becomes of critical importance.

I know this isnt sound PC advice and its not for everyone because of the risk involved, BUT if it ever came down to physical violence and that is usually not ANYWHERE near where you want it to be (beyond the point of resolve), be prepared to fight dirty. This isnt some referee UFC match where the winner gets a belt and the loser walks home with a sad looking face, its your fucking life.

If you can sense hes ready to throw the first punch or he already has, the first thing and ONLY thing that matters is protect yourself and the best way to do that is to disable that fucker. I was mugged once while at an ATM at night by some dude with a baseball bat and his buddy sitting in the drive away car. He was brandishing that bat and asking me for my money. Before he even finished telling me what he wanted I knee'd that idiot right in the nuts, as he crumpled over I grabbed his head and busted his nose across my knees again. He fell to the ground and I picked up that bat like I was ready to kill him. His buddy tried to get out of his car to help him but i just yelled back "DONT FUCKING COME OVER HERE!" And he just stood still while the mugger was crawling away with a bloody nose.

I immediately grabbed the bat, ran off to my car and sped off. Biggest adrenaline rush of my life. I kept that bat in my car for a few days but I eventually threw it away because I didnt want to explain to the cops if they ever came why I'm the one with the bat and hes the one busted up.

Would I do it again? Fuck yea. Next time I'd probably kick a few teeth in too, but thats all in self defense and I would never do this under any circumstance unless my life was danger.

Thanks for all of the awesome replies, guys! I feel like I'll have a much better idea of what to do in a future situation. These situations are beginning to happen to me quite frequently (once a month or so now), so I'm sure I'll have a chance to try out some of these ideas relatively soon. I'll be sure to report back whatever happens...

Whenever this has happened to me, it's almost always been an "escalating" type interview. The way I see it, I'll have to scare him away while he's trying to escalate it with a booming voice, or try to make it seem like I don't want to fight him until he gets into range of me being able to strike him and concentrate all of my force into one attack directed straight at his chin to try and buckle him immediately. Either that or straight to his groin? Which would be a better target to instantly drop someone? I've heard the chin usually instantly fucks someone up, but I was hit directly in the chin and it didn't really hurt...just disoriented me for a moment then had me madder then ever.

Either way, I suppose I''ll have to take a self-defense class or two now...which would you guys recommend? I've got pretty much anything you could think of near where I live.

The closest option is a Krav Maga gym, but there's muy thai and also a regular boxing gym nearby as well.

As long as there's regular sparring, you'll be in good shape. Try to learn some basic striking and some basic grappling. You don't need to learn a lot of techniques, but the ones you learn, you must know them inside and out.

take some boxing/grappling classes.. not to learn how to kick somebodies ass, but just to get over the whole ego aspect.. because once u learn how easy it is to really hurt somebody their tantrums stop looking intimidating & start looking stupid n childish.. then u can decide how u want to handle it...

a couple months ago i'd be like ohhh kick his ass.. but now that i know how to really fuck someones life up its really not worth it lol..

Wing Chun or anything not sport related like Krav Maga...  If they use fingers to the eyes, fish hooking, striking the throat, punching/kneeing/kicking the groin then you have a winner!

I would strongly urge everybody to be aware of the laws in whatever state/province/country they're in regarding self defense.  Here in America some states have absolutely fucked up laws regarding what amount of force you can use to defend yourself.

As people have said, though, you've got to project body language that you can't be fucked with.  The prolific serial killer Ted Bundy once confessed that he would know who to attack by observation.  He claimed that some women just projected themselves as being victims, and those are the ones he targetted.  He possibly didn't understand exactly what was going on, but I actually think he was very good at reading subtle body language that the woman was less likely to fight back, and more likely to go into a state of shock or try to bargain with him.

I train Wing Tsun, in EWTO. And i must say for self-defence it's pretty good. I mean it teaches you a real dirty fighting - strikes in the eyes, strikes in the knees and in the neck. And for smaller guys - it's the shit (EWTO i mean).

But let me say that it has it's downsides. First - No sparring in our organization which = no timing, work with the legs (if there are multiple opponents) and actual training to make the punches in dynamic einviourment (which would be if the opponent is experienced). So i would recommend a GOOD Wing Tsun gym, but it would be hard for the OP to estimate which one is.
Secondly - you can kill a person with those techniques. I'm kinda bothered by that since i'm a big guy and if i manage to hit someone in the neck using my whole bodyweight - he can be dead or in a critical condition. Then i'd have to deal with cops and prosecutors and could go in jail (at least in my country).

That's why it's important to remember a tip. If you're REALLY gonna fight and there are witnesses nearby and Escpecially if you can beat the crap out of the guy, yell: "HEY I DON'T WANT PROBLEMS, I DON'T WANT PROBLEMS" (while holding your hands in front of him the way i explained earlier to "stop" him (but secretly that's a guard) ) - and then you fuck him up. Why? Because the witness will say that "he didn't want problems, but he got attacked.". At least that's how in the Wing Tsun club they teach us (in sync with our nation's laws - dunno about the USA).
