The idea is to be seen as a high status individual who is downplaying his acheivements and not taking stuff too seriously.. like you don't need to try.  You make jokes about everything, including yourself - nothing's a big deal, no ego, no social climbing, just humour.  It's gonna work best if you have high value attributes already, I doubt it's going to take you from zero to hero unless you can pull it off with real flair [ ie subcommunicating value at the same time ].

It fits in well with the British discomfort about anything that looks like bragging.

Be careful though... at its worst, you're a low value guy who is hoping she'll take pity on you and deny your statements, or trying to convey higher-than-actual value through implied inversion.  It's not those things, it's casual humourful modesty, with high value not even implied.  Perhaps there's even an attempt to lower perceived value to make others more comfortable.

Most of my humor used to be self-deprecating like Conan before I got into the game long ago. Not sure it served me so well even though I got laughs. I'd say it's better than bragging though.

It's very dificult to be funny if all you're doing is bragging, even if it's hyperbolic.  The funniest stories you have are the ones where embarassing, unfortunate or humiliating things happen.

Here's an example:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtNmatV7-Ls

Actually I'd like to know why this got a bad reaction. Is it really the jokes? or is it the delivery?

His jokes were given to him by a writer who wrote the same jokes for other roasters who got a much better reception. A forum full of people who study delivery should be able to break it down.
