So I was raised in the deep south.  I don't have a very thick southern accent but I have often been told that I mumble or have "mush mouth".

My problem isn't really vocabulary or running out of things to say.  It's just that sometimes what I say is garbled.  And I tend to start out loud and end up drowning out... Getting lower and lower so people can't hear me.

I approached some girls last night and the response that I got was "English please".

I have been activley trying to change it, but it's like focusing on it makes it worse.  What can I do to improve it?  I've noticed that 99% of guys in pick-up have a very relaxed voice and a way with words.  I would like to improve this.

Has anyone else had this problem?  How can I work to improve it?

One thing that might help is to slow down your speech and work on speaking each consonant clearly. If you slow down you will have more control over your enunciation. Also focusing on a more powerful voice - not so much louder, but just more force and power to your voice, focusing on this will naturally make your words more clear and your voice more crisp.

Try these excercises - plays.about.com/od/actvities/a/enunciation.htm and focus on over the top enunciation and a loud clear vocal tone. Go as slow as you need to make each word fully pronounced.

Also I suggest reading out loud everyday, either a book, or this forum, anything. Just read out loud and make sure you are clearly enunciating everything, once again focusing on clear correct consonant sounding words instead of speed. Read out loud for atleast 15 minutes a day.

Over time of doing all this you should start improving to where enunciating clearly starts feeling more and more natural and relaxed. Its just a muscle and skillset that needs to be trained and worked on like everything else if you want it to improve.
Especially reading out loud, if you never used to do it  then you will probably become winded and tired pretty quickly - but after just a short amount of time you will improve greatly as for speaking stamina and strength. Hope this helps.

Scottsdale's advice is BOOM! Winning.  Slow down.  When you feel like a pimp you won't be rushed.  Conversely, speaking slowly will make you feel like a pimp.

Try pushing boundaries.  Obviously silences make you nervous.  Trying purposefully creating silences pusing eye contact.
