I do 20 minutes of simple breathing meditation a day. It is so easy to blow it off or fail to follow through. I took Eben Pagan's advice and wrote a friend a $300 check...if I don't follow through he cashs it.

Great way to force yourself to commit to something. There is always time, you just have to learn to maximize your free time and handle it.

Hi,
I have a question.
I will go to a Vipassana Meditation retreat very soon, but I heard you have to hand over your cellphone at the beginning of the course.
I also heard they will search all the rooms multiple times to see if there are any cellphones. Is this true??
I would like to go, but I cannot disconnect with the outside world for 10 days. It's not that I'm planning to have a lot of contact, but when my parents text me and I do not respond for ten days and neither can they connect with me in any other way, they might panic. Ofcourse I'm not going to tell anyone I'm going to a 10 day Buddhist retreat.

They didn't search the rooms at my retreat. No frisking either, lol. The teacher was NOT happy with me writing down notes for the question Q&A session though... It's for your own benefit. Think of it as a system reboot. You want to stimulate your mind as little as possible during the course and, if you can't live without your cellphone for 10 days you suck at life and should kill yourself immediately. Or, you grab your balls and realize it's not THAT big of a deal.

Hi,  Thanks for your answer.

I am really looking forward to my retreat next week. It's not that I can't live without my cellphone. It's just that nobody knows I am going on this retreat and I want to avoid any situation in which people think I am dead or something.

Can I learn how to meditate without taking such a VP retreat? Like going those mentioned 1-3h meditation sessions as effective as with a VP ?
Is it comparable with a bootcamp? Like you learn the basics and principles, but you could also learn it for yourself?

In this day and age you can pretty much learn any skill for yourself. No, it's obviously not going to be as effective. The retreat offers a low-stimulation enviroment where you take a break from your everyday lifestyle (with all it's distractions) and live and breath meditation for 10 days. Food and accomodation is also FREE. If it's avaible near your location it's a no brainer.

EPIC !!!

If you like a post, give it a bump so others don't miss it. Also the authors generally like to know they're not just thinking aloud but someone somewhere is getting value out of it (internet can be so impersonal) so the next time they have a though that needs to be expressed they are so much more likely to post it here. Thank you
