laying here thinking about it... perhaps it's that socially awkawrd shy people become smart... here me out.

they push away from social interaction and dwell on activities that are not social. like computer science, chemistry, etc. They focus all their time and energy in this since they don't focus any energy on social interactions.

but this also, doesn't work out too well. because i know many individuals who are just generally intelligent people not just smart in thier choice field. they just learn things faster than others. so it puts be back at square one.

just have to point out the absurdity of pondering this question. seems to be coming from the 'little me and all of my little problems' frame. but i digress.

there are many types of smart. some people are good with their hands. some people can make beautiful artwork, music, drawings. some ppl can figure complex mathematical equations as to why the world works. some people can write computer programs or web pages. some people can read incredibly fast. some people have hundreds of friends everywhere they go. some people are just happy with who they are.

aren't these all forms of "smart?"

simple answer - they think too much. you can't think your way through life.

I used to think about this too. The whole smart thing is a compensation and an excuse usually.   It's an excuse in the sense of "Nobody gets me" or " I'm above them because they're stupid" Which isn't true, as someone said above there's different kinds of intelligence.  The fact that the classic definition of 'intelligent' archetype tends to lack social skills may just be that they were discouraged form being social and tried to make up for not being so by filling their lives with computer science, chemistry, etc.  But seriously as they said above Doesn't matter. If you are like this, make the decision to learn how to not be.  Dwelling on it won't help. Get out there and be social, it will all be fixed if you do that =) hope this helped. I'm pretty tired so if you don't get me let me know.

Cheers,
R

Corksil's right.  There are different kinds of "smart."  IIRC, Bill Clinton has an IQ in the 140s or 150s and was a Rhodes Scholar.  He's also pretty damn charismatic, even if he does fuck a lot of easy Ugs.  Jim Morrison, the prototypical charismatic extroverted rock star, had an IQ of 150.  Those are just prominent examples off the top of my head.  There are also plenty of successful actors, athletes, musicians, comedians, etc. who are both extremely charismatic and extroverted, yet also highly intelligent.

The main thing is that the typical, bookish, high IQ variation of "smart..."  is all based on analytical and abstract thinking.  What is the definition of "inside your head" and "introverted?"  Being overly analytical and abstract, of course!

Another aspect of it is pure social conditioning, which starts young and creates a nasty negative feedback loop.  If you're "smart," you're taught to build your identity around being smarter than everyone else--effectively putting up your own wall between them.  You also realize from an early age that it doesn't get you picked in sports, doesn't get you girls, doesn't make you popular, etc.  Those are other skills.  However, rather than be taught how to cultivate those skills, you're given supremely bad advice on how to make friends, then you're encouraged to devote your attentions and focus to rather solitary activities: schoolwork, reading, quiet study, etc.  All of that stuff just makes you more isolated, even more bitter.  You stop wanting to be social and expressive because the rejection and awkwardness just hurts too much.  They're practiced at these things, but you're not.  It's like asking your typical playground basketball player to jump into an NBA game and keep up with the big boys.  You're just out of your league, which makes you doubt yourself, which makes you withdraw into your head even more.
