2011 South America Travels Advice Wanted.
I've said it before, I'll say it again, check out the Atacama Desert in Chile, especially "Valle de la Luna" it's pretty glorious IMO. As with most tourists, they will over charge you for everything, so if you can make friends with someone fluent then all the better, just get good at spanish but also realize the dialect is different everywhere and every country has their own slang which you won't find in traditional by the book spanish. Buses are pretty cheap I found and if you have alot of money to spend, it should be pretty easy to always find the best service. As far as pickup goes I found girls tend to be a bit more relationship oriented than say having one night stands but its still possible(When I went it seemed everyone had a bf or gf, to be single was almost abnormal). But for the most part human beings are human beings so anything is possible.
nice man, take in everything, the good and the bad, accept it all, it will be a life changing experience
I was suppose to go this winter but have decided to forgo it and go next year. I'm at the start of my business and I really want to get it fully developed before leaving.
I say learn spanish now! Watch movies with spanish substitles. write down ten sentences. memorize them. get pimsleur. get rosetta stone. force yourself 30 minutes a day.

I seem to have landed. 24 sweet job, good income, nice car, penthouse appartment (admittedly in a small town in Scotland), good friends to party with, sound family to chill with, but the only thing I really want to do is save for a year then pack it all in and then rock round south america for the whole of 2011. Got plans to see most of the latino countries and stop off some where for a while in an attempt to learn fluent spanish. Also have my sights set on some volantrary work in schools or and orphanage or what not. But I was hoping for some feed back on the pit falls for a white boy in a kilt travelling in SA.
If anyone has got experiences from back packing in latin america and specifically picking up I would be really grateful to hear about them. Is it possible / advisable to buy a car and rock round from south to north, or are trains planes and buses the way forward? Also if there are any residential dudes who want to party with a scotsman get in touch. I got some skills but happy to learn the latino ways....
