Here's a handy tip to get out of situations like this.

Carry around a spare wallet with you, and keep a few notes and old bank cards in it. Then if anyone mugs you, you just give them the 'fake' wallet.

I'll be in Bangkok in just a few days to host the RSD Free Tour (www.rsdfreetour.com) workshop in Bangkok.

Yeah, I've decided to carry a fake wallet next time I'm traveling. When me and my buddy go to Laos we are going to make a thigh "holster" to carry our passports and cash and shit. Then keep the fake wallet in our pockets.

When I pulled the knife out and walked towards those guys, it wasn't because I'm a super bad ass or anything. It was because you cant show fear in front of predators or it will give them strength. You need to have "Command Presence." I was also surrounded and didn't have a choice. Most predators are sissys, they only have balls because they are with 3-4 other guys. You need to make them scared. If those guys had a weapon they would have had a easier time winning the fight, but they know that the first guy that attacks is going to get stabbed and no one wants to get stabbed. I just saw this in a movie recently.... There was a mob of guys against one man. The man had like 5 bullets. He told the mob, you guys will probably win but I'm going to take 5 of you with me. So whoever wants to step up first go ahead. The mob left. They would have won, but no one wanted to step up first and take the hit.

Like Jlaix said, yeah I've been in the military. I've been a through a police academy, I've been to the middle east on a security contract. So I've had a lot of training. But I was still scared to death. I'm still upset about what happend because I keep thinking about how much worse it could have been. I think if I didn't have that training under my belt I would have been fucked. These guys probably do this shit all the time. They were definitely not expecting someone to pull a knife out. It threw them out of their reality. You could see the confusion kick in and they started backing up in fear.

I also take back what I said in my previous post. Dont carry a knife unless your really ready to stab someone and you know how to use it. You cant jab someone with a knife and hurt them, you need to have a backhand grip on it and thrust down or sideways when hitting them. If you haven't been shown that technique then dont carry a knife. Get some pepper spray instead. Also, a 5in knife isn't going to do shit when someone pulls out a 1 foot machete. I was just waiting for those jokers to pull one of those out, but they never did. The asians love those things.

I didn't really want this post to turn into the issue of me pulling my knife out or being tough. I just want everyone to be aware that shit happens and not to have a attitude like I had, it was stupid. You can always travel safe in other countries, you just need to do it correctly.

Fuck that!
When I travel it's all about the Four Seasons in a wealthy western nation.  I might be the most sheltered American in the world :).

I have cockroaches and ants in my room......Seriously. I also get bit every night by some unknown insect. It leaves welts like a mosquito.
The place I live in is supposed to be the nicest in my neighborhood too. I can only imagine what the other places have in them. Scary
Four Seasons sounds like heaven right now. I haven't been in a nice hotel in a year. This place beats Qatar though. I was killing viper snakes every day over there, so a couple cockroaches isn't really that bad.
M8king: Yeah ths probably wiill turn into a "breatk thru" moment  for me. What's crazy is that I've technically been in more dangerious situations. We had a IED come right through my search lane one time and it didn't explode. I had a guy come up to my post and say he was going to blow himself up, then there are the shooting incidents which I'm not allowed to talk about ( I was working for a military contracting company and it's not even classified but they dont want bad exposure like blackwater had, so we all have to keep quite about all the shootings and shit). But like I said before, I've always had back up. I've never been alone. This time I was all alone and it felt worse than all of those situations combined. It's crazy how shit like that works. Thanks for the post man, you always have good input on situations.

I'd like to know that too.   I'm doing BJJ right now but it's obviously largely not transferrable to "the streets"... I've heard Muay Thai is similarly inapplicable although obviously the striking has more carryover.  Krav Maga?  I looked into it but was kind of put off by the ridiculous knife/gun disarms... although the "reality training" side of it looked quite promising.  I really have very little idea though.  What do you learn in the forces?

Nice escape man that was an intense story

Reminds me of when I was in Rome Italy, I was in the hotel when my two friends I was traveling with got robbed (cigarettes and a 20 bucks ish) when going to the train station at like 1 or 2am to make a call. Our hotel was literally 0.75 blocks away from the MAIN train station in Rome. Never would have thought...but my two friends are both 6'4 and 6'5, skinny, but stilll tall. They told me the two theives were kind of built and had knives
