There is nothing that can make you more humble in life than being put in a situation where your life is on the line.

I've been walking around for the past year thinking I was unstoppable. My friends and family all told me to be careful of people trying to rob me in foreign countries, but I always told them that I would fuck anyone up who tried to rob me, and I believed it. I fucked up Arabs in Qatar, how could little asians be worse than muslim extremists?

Instead of taking the train to the border to get a new visa, a cab driver offered to take me for a really cheap price at the train station. I figured it would save me 4 hours round trip and it would be worth the extra money. This guy spotted me out of a crowed of a 100 people, came up and gave me the offer. I consider my self to be a pretty buff dude. I'm not huge right now like I am in my picture, but I still have decent size on me. I never thought anyone would try to fuck with me.

It was so stupid of me to even think to get into a cab with someone who was going to drive me that far. This guy could have drove me into the middle of the jungle and put two bullets into my head and taken my wallet and drove off. I never even thought about it. I know it sounds silly but I never thought anyone would have enough balls to fuck with me.

The cab driver drove for about 15 minutes then all of a sudden turned down a alley and made a bunch of turns and loops. I asked him where he was going and he said he had to stop somewhere really quick. I started to get a little uneasy and started thinking about where I was actually at, in the middle of nowhere in bangkok. The driver ended up pulling into a gated area with a building in front. There were about 5-6 drug addict asians sitting in front of the building. My driver stopped, got out of the cab and said "I'll be back in 5 minutes." I told him to hurry up. When he left, 3-4 guys started walking towards my cab. I finally got it into my head that these jokers were going to try and rob me. I couldn't believe it. They started walking really slow towards me like they were scoping me out. I got out of the cab and ran out of the complex with my knife in my hand. The guys started chasing me.....

I hauled ass and made it to one of the alleys and turned around and saw that they were gone. So I stopped running and figured I just made one of the stupidist mistakes in my life. I started walking towards where I thought a main road was and all of a sudden a motor bike speeds in front of me and two guys jump off. It was two of the assholes who were chasing me. Then a cab drove up behind me and blocked me in. One guy got out. So I was surrounded in a fucking alley by 3 guys. They told me to give them my money. I said "Fuck you." I couldn't give them my wallet, I had everything in there. I had to bring all my shit because I was going to the border to get a new visa, so I had money, credit cards, my passport, eveything. If I lost it I would have been fucked. I just couldn't give it to them. Then they said "give me your money and we will leave" then I pulled out my knife and started walking towards the two guys in front of the motorcycle. I told them that I was going to "fucking kill them if they didn't leave" they started backing up and said "just give us 3000 baht and we will leave" and I replied again with "fuck you." For some reason, god only knows why, another cab driver turned down that alley. He was probably taking a short cut somewhere. I leaned left, then ran right, like a football move around the two dudes and jumped in the cab and told the driver to take off. The guys followed my cab but then gave up and turned around.

I was so lucky in every aspect. They could have had knifes and guns and could have chopped me up into little pieces. Maybe they just forgot to grab them when they got onto their bike. Maybe they were just as scared as I was. I dont know and I'm still surprised I didn't get stabbed or shot. Also, they could have ambushed me before I even got out of the cab. If they were any smarter they would have been waiting for the cab to pull in and the guys could have opened my door and started cutting me up right there. It didn't happen though thank god.

Anyways, I made it out alive but it has fucked my mind up. I'm actually a little scared to go out now. It really made me think about how close I was to getting murdered and how quick it happened. I've been in many many situations involving my gun in the middle east, I'm not going to elaborate on them but I've been in the shit before. It never bothered me because I always had back up, my friends were always there to help me out. This situation was different. I was alone, no one was there except myself. I felt very empty and very scared.

After I made it back home, I started calling family and friends and telling them that I loved them and catching up with them. Stuff that I haven't done in a while. This whole situation has humbled me.

Whenever you guys decide to go out, never allow yourself to be in a situation like this. Especially in a third world country. Please be carefull and always carry a weapon on you. I always have two knifes on me. I'm going down to buy some pepper spray today. That would have worked wonders yesterday.

Another crazy thing happend. I went out later that night and I felt so free. I felt like I didn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore, I was just myself and I was completely happy with that. I ended up having great interactions with some women too. I usually have good interactions when I go out and I normally pull, but this time was different. It was so much more sincere. Like I was truely being myself.

Anyways, I just hope you guys learn a lesson from my mistake. Start living your life guys, enjoy your time and try and make some more time for your loved ones.

Ah I feel you dude, I used to live in Bangkok, awesome place, but dodgy as anything....reading that takes me back.

Btw, something to note, I'm not sure if you're on any particular visa, but going over the land borders only gives you 15 days, where as if you land at an international airport you get 30 + you can extend it for another 30 days, all in all safer, and you get to go to another country  shades That's if any of this applies to you haha.

That shit sounded intense man.

I kinda felt the same way as you do, like noone gonna mess with me (except I'm a skinny Asian dude haha). After reading that its kinda like a reminder to stay humble.

Fucking cabs, you can never trust them.
You're lucky they don't have guns.
I'm thai. I don't live in Bangkok. I never trust them also.
I'm going to Bangkok for the freetour on Monday 15th.
Here's what I suggest.

How to take a taxi safely in Bangkok..

1. Don't take the one that approaches you. You'll ethier get overcharged or robbed or raped. People here take cab all the time.
They don't need to look for customer. Especially in train station, bus station and airport. A lot of criminals there the cop can't do siht.
I got approched at the bus station all the time when I was a teenager and took bus to Bangkok. Never took them.

2. Check the license plate and cab driver license. The driver license is always in the passenger side front console. Make sure the photos matches also remember the license plate number.

3.The green/yellow cabs are own by driver. The other color cabs are own by companies. Which ones are safer? Always the companies' ones. Drivers must me legit in order to lend a car.
They have the records and deposits from the drivers so if anything happens it's easy to track him down. No fake license plate too.
Taxi companies have newer cars, smell nicer and gps system. Take the one with newer model, same price.

4. Try not too take shortcuts. If you suspect that you're off the route just open the window. There are a lot of people everywhere in Bangkok. If the road is quiet it's probably dead end. Prepare the call the cop.
The number is 1155 or 191.

REMEBER THE TOURIST POLICE NUMBER IS 1155.
Local police is 191.

I hope this helps,
Max

u r really really lucky, I know the feeling.

My first night in turin italy my new roommate and I decide to hit up the bars. We had no idea where we were and were so drunk we could barely walk by the time we left. We started walking down an alleyway and when we looked behind us we realized we were being followed by a group of italians. We started running, they chased us, and two guys got ahold of my roommate while I kept running. He told me to keep running and forget about him. I almost did, but once I was a block away I reached into a garbage can found a bottle and ran back to rescue my roommate. Once I turned the corner I saw my roommate covered in blood getting punched in the face by two guys. I charged towards them waving the wine bottle in the air ready to kill the motherfuckers. They got scared and ran off and my roommate was still conscious and didn't have any major injuries. We stumbled home, went to bed, then a few hours later as we were going to school a lady commit suicide off the balcony above ours, we heard the screams and looked over our balcony and saw a dead body lying in the street.

traveling can be very very dangerous if u aren't careful, this experience completely changed my outlook on things.

Thank you very very much for that info. That's about the best advice I could get for taking a taxi. And the asshole who approached me had a green and yellow taxi too. I think his ID was fake too.
I will definitely remember to get a license plate number next time.

I'm also going to be at the conference on the 15th. I'll probably see you there man.

To Elemeno: Thats a really shitty thing that happend in Italy. That's great that you went back after your friend. After all that shit a lady commites suicide in front of you, lol. You must have been pretty fucked up the rest of the trip.

To NewLife: Yeah, I'm thinking about flying next time. My buddy from Qatar is coming up and we are planning on taking the train to Vietiane, Laos and get our Tourist visa at the embassy. If we go together we will be fine. He's a real badass, he was there when they captured Sadam. I saw a picture of him standing in Sadam's Grave when they caught him. It was pretty cool to see. Anyways it's always better to travel with friends. I'm hoping to get a job teaching english, then I can get a work visa and stay here. I wont have to deal with these god dam border runs and risking my safety every time.

glad you made it out intact.

I have been to over 35 countries including thailand and definitly been in some sketchy cabs.

ironically the only place I have ever been atacked is back home in toronto. got jumped from behind by two thugs with lead pipes while walking a gf to a bus stop at night. Got 36 stiches in my head and my ear got cut in half. But thankfully no permanant damage.

If I get a bad vibe in a cab I start talking about how im broke and have to find a place to crash for free because I got no money  i dont have enough money for the cab and hotel.

Also even though I know how to use a knife I dont like carrying a weapon. i dont know it just feels like it would atract trouble.

Bangkok is not dangerous if you know what people to avoid.

I'm wondering if any local will attend the conferrence.
I'll be there too.
