Normally, during my university holidays i would go and live with my parents and work a crappy job in the middle of nowhere. This summer i want to do something different. In the interest of personal growth, gaining new experiences, and using my english accent on hot american girls i've decided to try and work in the USA this summer, only trouble is i have never been there before and don't know how things work.

Are any of you bartenders? How easy is it to get a bartending job in somewhere like new york? I've got bartending + waiting experience and would be willing to work any hours. Do you recommend i just turn up and hand my cv in to every place i can find or is it possible to apply for the jobs before i get there?

Accomodation wise, how much should i be expecting to pay per week in rent? i don't mind living in an absolute hole if necessary.

Thanks guys!

US women will love you!

Going out and talking to people and just being generally cool and friendly will help you get the job.  Some guy I met gave me this resume tip:  When you submit your resume, put it in a giant pink envelope.  It obscured every other resume in the pile.

He got the job!

I don`t know about U.S., but a couple of years ago I went to Canada for a season to work in  resort.
absolutely great experience, I had a lot of fun and canadian girls used to tell me they loved my accent ( I`m not british but anyways they think my spanish accent is cool). and it`s really easy to find a job in places where a lot of tourists comes, etc. they are always lookin for new guys for the staff.
I would recommend a big city like NY or Miami maybe. you`ll find a job.
have fun.

My girlfriend is actually teaching a class on how to become a bartender in the USA. If you want to fly down to Salt Lake City, then you can take it. However, to answer your question, you may want to look into contractor positions for bartenders for private events or catering positions that are by contracted event because they do not require a work visa for many of them and often pay with cash. On the issue of rent, NY rent starts around $250/week for a simple place in Manhattan and goes up waaaaaaaaaay way way above that. On the other hand, NYC is probably the most expensive city to live in within the USA. Getting a job bartending in NYC is highly competitive and can definitely not be categorized as easy, but there are plenty of jobs.

Ah wow, talk about coincidence! I'm also a student from the UK, looking around for holiday work for around 4 months over the summer. How would I go about applying/finding jobs, as I can't exactly hop on a plane for the purpose of handing out CVs confused

Well, you can. I don't know about US, but three of my friends hopped on a plane to London and had full-time jobs after only a week of handing out CV's. They went to London with ~1800 pounds in their pockets. I'm planning on doing the same, but saving up maybe $6000 before I move to Florida or California. Should last me a long time, though I probably have to work for a while in boring old Sweden first.
